Are we running out of antibiotics?

The short answer is yes, according to the World Health Organization. But of course, there is always more to the story than it seems. Unfortunately, our research and technology isn’t developing as quickly as bacteria and viruses are.
They are becoming more and more resistant, too, which is a major problem. Antibiotics that worked a few months ago, might not be suitable for another outbreak. Even if we are talking about the same disease. And then we haven’t even mentioned those that resist more than one antibiotics.
The good news is, that alternative ways of bypassing the resistance problem are constantly being researched. A short term fix is already available, but it is just that, a temporary solution.
There is yet another problem that we have to face. Most of the developed medicine isn’t something that’s brand new and innovative. This adds to their temporary nature, but doesn’t help humanity in the long term. Then there is the issue of clinical trials, and so on. Everything takes time, and that’s something we are running out of. Well, apart from antibiotics, that is.
So, should we be worried? Again, a difficult and complicated question. The solution might lie in eliminating the issue before it even happens. Prevention is the key here, and WHO has started working on that, alongside their antibiotics research. We can only hope that the two combined will provide a lasting solution.
