Brexit – The United Kingdom leaves the European Union
News breaking across the world this morning about the UK breaking away from Europe is receiving mixed emotions. On one hand you have those who would prefer the UK to stand alone, and on the other hand there are those who realise it will have major implications to their industry and their travel opportunities. You cannot close your borders to other countries and expect that they keep their borders opened to you.
It is kind of ironic that a country that built itself on invading and colonising other countries has reacted so strongly to a very much assumed invasion from others into their country. They built their power on the commonwealth countries across the world but no longer have a hold there. India and Hong Kong are no longer under British rule and a source of revenue.
It is important we listen to the language being used to sway the people, and watch for these words. Hitler rose to power in Europe by using some very strong propaganda tools. The people listened because the economy was poor, work was hard to find and modern intelligent people turned to barbaric methods in an attempt to turn it around. Eleven million innocent men, women and even the smallest of children died in the most barbaric fashion because of those unfounded fears spilled by one man. We must also remember, many Americans laid their lives on the line to stop it in its tracks.
The worst mistake anyone can make is to believe that this cannot happen again, and it cannot happen here and it cannot happen in these enlightened times. Because it can and it will, as long as we blame people for simply their race, and point the finger of blame at them for a problem they did not create, we will stand on the doorstep of utter mayhem and barbaric behaviour.
It is important that the world listens to history and learn not to make the mistakes again. Most countries are built on migration. Our ancestors at some stage stood on the shores of our country and were called immigrants. Does that mean we don’t belong here? Our ancestors ways were different to the people who lived here, were they wrong? My home country Ireland was built on migration and invasion from many countries over many generations. Countless numbers of people died all because of ignorance and fear strangers, people we believed to be different in some way, or they believed those who lived here to be different. If Irish people had not migrated to the USA, how many of the American presidents, actors, actresses would never have come to pass?
We are all one race, on one tiny rock floating through a vast dark universe. It’s time to start thinking as one. Lay down our arms and reach out our hands, there is no colour, no race, just one human race and all our blood is red and all our hearts beat to one rhythm. The past is to be learned from, not repeated, no wall should stand between any two people simply because someone else deems them to be different.
