Coronavirus: Bringing Out the Worst & Best of Humanity

Coronavirus: Worst of Humanity / Best of Humanity

Coronavirus, COVID-19, global pandemic. Call it what you will but the result is the same: a great many people are frightened.

People are frightened for themselves, frightened for their loved ones, frightened for their jobs and finances both now and in the future, they are frightened for their way of life.

It’s important to say that this is NOT our new normal. It is only our new temporary normal. In time, probably sooner than you may think, life as we knew it will resume for the most part. Hopefully, we will all be better for having gone through this crisis.

During times such as this, people tend to show their true colors. Good or bad, most of us are seen for whom we truly are.

Fear & Hate

I have been asked by serious and some long-time clients if Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos created this health crisis and subsequent economic concern. No!

I have been asked if this global pandemic is man-made. No!

However, it was the selfishness of man that brought it into the human realm. These specific individuals need to be held accountable.

With regard to accountability, we must be objective and educated. We cannot be unrealistic and extreme.

To this day, more than 18 years after the attacks of 9/11 in the United States, many Americans still hold a deep and unwavering hatred for Muslims in general just because the terrorists behind the attacks were Muslim.

Now, Asians are being targeted all over the world because it is believed that the current global pandemic originated in China. Earlier this month, an Asian-American who was born and raised in the United States was doused in bleach on a New York City subway.

There are similar stories of Asians being attacked all over the world out of ignorance. Oriental restaurants are greatly suffering as a result of fear and ignorance.

At the same time, the beauty of humanity is shining through. Most humans are naturally given to kindness and generosity and are stepping up to help those in need.

Caring & Love

This past a week, an 80-year-old American woman was found sitting in her car at a grocery store praying that someone would come along and help her get some much-needed groceries. She feared going into the store and was trying to protect herself from being exposed to the virus when a young woman approached her car and asked if she could help. The older woman lowered her window about an inch and handed the younger woman a short shopping list and a $100 bill. The kind young woman soon returned with the older lady’s needed goods and her change.

In times of crisis such as this, we find out who we really are as people. Fortunately, or in some cases unfortunately, we find out who our neighbors truly are.

The stories of good far outweigh the bad.

It is incredibly difficult to see those whom we love to suffer and in some cases pass. I do not wish to discount that in any way.

But the truth is, the many of us will not contract the virus. Of those who do, the vast majority will be fine. In time, our lives will go back to normal.

There will be loss, loss of finances, loss of life. But we, as a people, will overcome and hopefully be better for having gone through it.

Be Sensible

It is grossly unfair to hold an entire culture or ethnic group responsible. As I am writing this article, my family is waiting for the Oriental food I just ordered to be delivered. I love chicken fried rice, my son greatly enjoys sweet and sour chicken, others in my family are quite partial to beef/broccoli. We all really like egg rolls and fortune cookies. I refuse to allow this current health and financial crisis to change that. Neither should you!

Something else you should not be doing is spraying your children with disinfectant. Yes, some people are actually doing this.

What you should do includes checking on your elderly neighbors even if only through a phone call or a note on their front door offering your assistance if needed. Go outside. Spend some time in your backyard. Relax. Laugh. Share your toilet paper!
