News this week is that Elizabeth Gilbert is separating from her husband who she has shared 12 years of her life with. The Author of Eat, Pray, Love announced that she was separating from her “Felipe”, a fictional character based on her real life love “Jose Nunes”. Nune’s character met with Elizabeth at the end of her travels in the book and would apparently be the perfect ending to the perfect book as the two characters lived happily ever after.
Gilbert announced the separation on her Facebook page saying “I’m separating from the man whom many of you know as “Felipe” – the man whom I fell in love with at the end of the Eat, Pray, Love journey”. She added that he has been her dear companion for over 12 years and that they have been wonderful years. She didn’t elaborate on the situation and to be honest, I feel there is no need to. Separation rarely comes from both sides of the fence and someone is normally left hurting at the end of the day. All we can do is wish her well for her future and hope she doesn’t close her heart to the joy that new love can bring.
