In any romantic relationship, a little rain must fall. No one relationship is perfect and without issues, problems or concerns. So, how should you and your significant other handle the problems that plague your shared connection?

The most important thing a couple should do when trying to rectify their problems and make things right is to keep the problem between the two of you. Do not involve other people by crying on someone’s shoulder in an effort to gain sympathy or to sway a mutual friend to take your side. Be especially mindful to not bad-mouth your partner to anyone, especially relatives and close friends.

Suppose you tell your mother, sister or best friend that your man cheated on you with ten other women then, for whatever reason, you choose to take him back and remain with him. What is your mother, sister or best friend supposed to think? You basically told her that your partner is a stone-cold loser who cannot keep it in his pants, yet you choose to stand by him. You are the one who ends up looking poorly in the eyes of the person you talked with. That person questions why you would choose to take him back after all that he did to you.

It is understandable that you may need someone to talk with to help you come to terms with what’s going on or to try and help you solve the problem through that other person’s own experiences and advice. There is nothing wrong in simply needing a friend to talk with. Just be very careful as to how much you share with that person and be honest. Do not embellish or make the problem out to be worse than it actually is. Try to keep the worst details to yourself.

As for actually working on the problem with your significant other, be completely open and honest at all times. Do not be afraid to speak your peace and make yourself heard but be very, very careful about placing blame.

If you choose to begin your conversation by saying, “You did this or that,” then the other person will automatically become defensive and will begin by first trying to defend themselves, then they will work to turn the situation around on you.

Say you are fed up with your partner always leaving his or her wet towel on the bathroom floor. If you choose to begin the conversation with, “I am so fed up with you leaving your towel on the floor,” your partner will most likely find a way to blame you. He may say something like, “Well, if you would maybe do some laundry, the hamper would not be overflowing and I could put the towel there.”

Nothing will ever get accomplished this way.

Instead, try something like, “I would really appreciate it if you would take an extra minute to put your towel in the hamper.

Another good tip for handling relationship issues is to not ever have that much-needed big discussion right before bed. There is also a popular belief of never going to bed angry. These two tips may contradict one another, but it is always best to keep the problems out of the bedroom. In fact, designate a “safe place” in which anything can be said without fear of repercussion. Honor that safe place and what it represents by not bringing up what was said later.

For you and your partner to both always strive for open and honest communication at all times in your relationship will also go a long way to avoid many issues. If you can openly discuss any looming issues before they become big problems, you will be well on your way to avoid that big blow up.
