“Life Animated”- Disney movie but it’s not from Disney
“Life animated” is a movie of how a young autistic man learned to communicate through the cartoon characters of Disney. These characters have been a part of nearly all our lives as we grew up, in whatever country, background or culture you belong to. Although we look back on them with a smile and the innocence of a child, they can sometimes be stereotypical and quite controversial by today’s standards. For this young man, they were the gateway he needed to reach from his hidden world to our world outside.
Documentarian Roger Ross Williams took a touching but straightforward look at a young man who is autistic and had developed a way of communicating via the cartoon characters. It is based on the prize-winning book by Ron Suskind, whose son is the subject of the documentary. This wasn’t something that was thought to Owen, the subject of the project, he just appeared to sort it out for himself. This is amazing on many levels, but what’s more important and more valuable to any parent with this condition. Owen has shown that there is a fully functional person within the silent walls of autism and perhaps in his own way has shown us, that although we haven’t found it yet, there is a doorway that hopefully one day we will find the key for.
