Meditation: The focus of the breath

Breathing!

Let’s breathe new life into the future, an essential part of remaining in the land of the living, something we take for granted because it’s always there, no real thought process or concentration required. We don’t have to consider the technicalities of the expanding ribcage or the contracting diaphragm. It all runs like a well oiled machine.

Perfect balance.

Our body generally knows what it needs in order to function, figuratively and literally, and we spiritual types cheerlead the art of mindfulness and meditation.

Literally speaking there is much to be gained from this daily practice, and not just when life becomes too hectic. Modern daily life can be a challenge, especially for ‘technophobes,’ what with ‘virtual everything’ and too many things requiring focus at any one time; laptops, iPads, multiple cell phones, wifi, mobile data, grocery shopping, school run, not to mention work…

A never-ending list!

The creation of the self-fulfilling prophecy, unconsciously manifesting the stresses and frustrations that we want to avoid in the first place.

The perfect antidote? Time out! AKA Mindfulness and Meditation!

Something else to try to fit in to stress out over?

Even if you’re not going through challenges, mindfulness and meditation is something of a miracle cure. It’s not a time management technique, but you will find that you have more time for fun stuff.

Quite simply, mindfulness is the act of being present in the moment. Fully aware of who, what and where we are, it requires no one other than ourselves, it’s not necessary to react to outside factors or allow them to overwhelm us.

There is an awareness of how we feel, physically, emotionally, intellectually. Anyone can do it and it doesn’t require technology nor does it require specialist equipment. Take time out to pause, breath, switch off technology, ignore the doorbell.

There’s no rush to be anywhere other than where you are right now. It’s not necessary to clear the mind and you may find that thought processes run back and forth. We can register those thoughts and gain an understanding of what they are actually about.

Allow the mind to drift and if the same thoughts come back to our conscious mind, we can just let them go again. Thoughts may come up that feel less than great and that’s OK.

You’re here to be kind to yourself without judgement.

Meditation is the focus of the breath. It uses breathing as a powerful anchor to bring us in the here and now. The mind may go to places that cause the breathing to change tempo, and so we simply bring it back, ready for the next breath. Through meditation, time and space is the only thing that exists.

A comfortable place to rest, feet flat on the floor, back upright, considering the natural curve of the spine, arms resting with palms facing up, softened eyes, or eyes closed. The slow rise and fall of the chest and abdomen. The goddess allows her mind to wander back and forth, mind and body in sync…

And when ready, raise your softened gaze or open your eyes… stretch… yawn… and breath…

Diana-Julie’s Verdict

The general consensus is that mindfulness and meditation are good for our health, and I absolutely agree. It’s a way of life for many of us… just like morning coffee. Try it… and prepare to be the master of your own mind.

  1. For many spiritually advanced people meditation is a 24/7 skill. There are two types, active and passive. There is no such beast as the lirttle now. Controlling the mind is not something which comes easy to advanced people for whom The Soul is in control. But allowing the illusion of control in order to function in 3rd dimensional earth space can be helpful. We live here in anchorage but have one foot in the great beyond. Singing helps. Just sing.
