Oscar nomination for Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has trained extensively by all accounts for her latest offering of ‘Jackie’ and has described the challenges of portraying the iconic former first lady Jackie Kennedy. The main challenge? Jackie’s distinct way of speaking. Portman has described Jackie’s ‘finishing-school exactitude’ and her ‘quivering notes like fine bone china that might crack with even the softest impact’ but she has said that there was no question of Jackie’s cool authority when it was needed.

The film tells of the aftermath following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas, 1963. The focus is on the private grief of a woman forced to endure public scrutiny whilst maintaining a dignified and graceful façade. It shows the interview that Mrs Kennedy gave to a journalist at that time, as Jackie attempted to secure her husband’s legacy. The film makers wanted to understand and portray the intrigue of the former first lady and what she meant for the country. Portman believed Jackie was incredibly mysterious and surprisingly unknown for a famous person.

The Hollywood Reporter has called the film ‘a shattering reflection on loss and legacy.’ The film has already premiered receiving good reviews and Natalie Portman has been nominated in the Best Actress category at the Oscars for this role.
