Oscar nomination for Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has trained extensively by all accounts for her latest offering of ‘Jackie’ and has described the challenges of portraying the iconic former first lady Jackie Kennedy. The main challenge? Jackie’s distinct way of speaking. Portman has described Jackie’s ‘finishing-school exactitude’ and her ‘quivering notes like fine bone china that might crack with even the softest impact’ but she has said that there was no question of Jackie’s cool authority when it was needed.

The film tells of the aftermath following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas, 1963. The focus is on the private grief of a woman forced to endure public scrutiny whilst maintaining a dignified and graceful façade. It shows the interview that Mrs Kennedy gave to a journalist at that time, as Jackie attempted to secure her husband’s legacy. The film makers wanted to understand and portray the intrigue of the former first lady and what she meant for the country. Portman believed Jackie was incredibly mysterious and surprisingly unknown for a famous person.

The Hollywood Reporter has called the film ‘a shattering reflection on loss and legacy.’ The film has already premiered receiving good reviews and Natalie Portman has been nominated in the Best Actress category at the Oscars for this role.

Véronique’s Verdict

Let’s see what today’s cards say about Natalie’s movie. We have the Emperor, the Magician and the Six of Wands.

The Emperor
This represents the iconic former first lady herself. There is a reasoned power within this card as Jackie worked to do the right thing for her late husband and her country. An ambitious energy is revealed with an absence of emotion.

The Magician
This represents the actress, Natalie Portman and her magical transformation. This card shows the ability to know and manipulate the physical. There are layers upon layers of flesh and blood as well as thoughts and emotions and Natalie is the mediator between the worlds which decide what will be made real.

The Six of Wands
This is the awards ceremony, the sense of honor and pride that comes with the nomination. This card reveals the energy of winning and there is a sense of celebration.

Film makers will carry on pushing the boundaries through film, showing another aspect of a story offering a new awareness. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see the results but the cards bode well for a win. Watch this space!
