Setting Up Your Own Sacred Space
You don’t need to be a witch, a magician or a super spiritual person in order to set up a sacred space in which you can find a moment of calm and connection! The benefits of owning a sacred space are multiple: You have a place of power where you feel safe and connected, you have that sensation of reverence that brings calm and reassurance and you have a spot in your place that you can associate to a determined state of mind that will make it easier for you to get into meditation or into the right mindset to perform ritual if you feel inclined to.
As well, you don’t need to spend a ton of money or to dedicate one entire room to this, in fact, you can have a portable or concealed space that nobody else has to notice and won’t give away your spiritual belief to anyone that passes by.
Here are some ideas to create your own sacred space depending on your possibilities and personal desires.
Concealed Altars
It is fairly easy to conceal an altar and you can do it in about any room. Kitchen altars are quite popular amongst practitioners of magic, you can use a bit of room in a shelf to place a few items that make you feel aligned with the diviner or your higher self. This may include a small offering, a figure, a print, something that you can make sounds with, such as a metallic pestle and mortar or a small bell and perhaps a charcoal burner where you can occasionally burn some herbs.

For those that are struggling with self-image, you can place a concealed altar in a shelf in the bathroom or in the counter of your vanity. You can place a candle, or an essential oil burner or diffuser, images that you consider sacred, affirmations, words of power, small offerings or decorations that you can link to the divine.
The living room is another great space for a concealed altar. It is usually the most decorated room of every house, and so, it is very easy to conceal an altar, even if more elaborated, and make it pass as decoration. Nobody will think anything weird if you have a figure of Venus in the living-room, right?
Traditional Sacred Spaces
For a more traditional sacred space you can dedicate a full table or counter, and in this sort of altar, you can place more “extravagant” items depending on your beliefs. This may include figures, candles, a bowl for offerings, incense burners, a decorative cloth, fresh flowers, plants and so on! This sort of space allows you to go wild with the decoration, although it will not have an impact in the effectiveness of your practice!
At the end of the day, your sacred space can also be an armchair by the window where you like to knit or read, or a simple painting hanging on the wall that gets you into a zone of mental calm and relaxation. The aim of any sacred space should always be making you feel safe, comfortable and aligned. Choose what works best for you and enjoy its benefits!
