The Frequently Maligned Death Tarot Card
The Death Tarot card does not necessarily or even usually, indicate physical death but if you are giving a reading or mention this Major Arcana Tarot card, the usual reaction is a deep intake of breath if you are not familiar with the Tarot cards.
It sometimes brings up the fearful reactions of physical death or acknowledging that a life situation is facing its demise. This card simply indicates deep transformation and change, and likely to be both inner and outwardly in your life.
Situations, things and people that you have counted on or gotten used to may no longer be available to you in quite the same way as they once were, and this transition can be difficult for some people. The energy of this time is not just change or destruction; it is change or destruction followed by renewal. Even though one door may have closed, another is opening.
When the Death card is pulled upright it usually indicates the direct ending of something in your life, perhaps a phase, journey, job or habit? Mourning the loss of the old and looking forward to the new. When pulled inverted or reversed, it usually indicates a self-absorbed or fearful resistance to change, experiencing a sense of ‘no way out’ in a life situation.
It may also indicate if no action is taken, the Universe will make the changes for you so you can address a needed life transformation. When the Death card is pulled pertaining to different areas of your life, in general the card may be indicating some of the scenarios listed below.
If you hate your job, or are “underemployed,” but you’ve not wanted to leave because of the steady income, you could end up being forced out. Ultimately, this would lead to your “greater good,” but drawing this card shows transformation is coming regardless.
If you are clinging to a relationship that you are deeply unhappy in because you don’t want to let go of the familiar, or because you hate to be alone, you are doing neither yourself or your partner any favors. Have a frank and honest discussion about the problem(s) you have with the relationship, and if they can’t or won’t make a change or you can’t or won’t, then perhaps it’s time to let it go.
But first, you have to face the problem and try to fix it. Not all relationships are fixable. Don’t beat your head against a wall for very long. You’ll know when it’s “long enough.”
You may have to make some sacrifices to deal with coming financial challenges. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help if you need it. Don’t avoid reality, if this comes about. Ultimately you will profit greatly from what you have learned. You’ll be fine in the long run.
Taking a look at keeping your stress level manageable, change of diet or a healthy exercise plan put in place is a must in order to stay in good health now. Deal with any problems that come up physically, don’t try to avoid them. Don’t abuse your body with alcohol or in other ways. If you need healing, ask for it on both the literal and the spiritual planes.
The Death Tarot card is asking you to trust even if you are in the midst of a “dark night of the soul” that this too shall pass. Don’t fight change. Allow yourself to feel what you feel, but don’t wallow in pain or sorrow; if you need help pulling yourself away from any pain or loss that you are suffering, reach out.
Susan Z’s Verdict
I am always feel encouraged when I see this Death card come up in readings. Depending on where the card placement is in the spread, it always indicates that change is imminent. No one likes change but it is always necessary to bring about solutions to being unhappy or discontent in your life. It full on addresses the old saying “if you keep on doing the same thing, you just keep on getting the same old results.” So, when you see this Death card, yes, do take a deep breath and know that you are getting ready to start something new and adventurous, whether you were ready for it or not. Those changes might be just big enough to be life altering for the better.
