Why did wealthy New Yorkers ask state to raise their taxes?

It is often said that the poorest someone is, the easier they donate what little they have. Which is quite often the case, as those people know how it feels not to have enough. They feel empathy towards their fellow citizens. On rare occasions, the rich offer support and money for those in need.

In New York, the cream of the crop decided to plead with the government to make that possible. Eighty of wealthy New Yorkers signed a petition, asking to be able to pay more tax. Part of the letter said: “We need to invest in pathways out of poverty and up the economic ladder for all of our fellow citizens, including strong public education from pre-K to college. We need to invest in the fragile bridges, tunnels, waterlines, public buildings and roads that we all depend on.”

Among many enthusiastic millionaires was Abigail Disney, who also gave her name to the project. However, their good intention might not be enough, as the government has its own agenda. Besides, the people wanting to pay more are mostly those who inherited their millions. Not to mention that a similar petition was ignored before.

Either way, if someone wants to give, there are plenty of ways to do so. One might ask whether it would have been easier for them to support existing causes? It’s a good question why these people saw the most plausible way for their donation through taxes. It definitely puts a lot of trust in the government and the law. Wouldn’t they be better off (and the projects they want to support), if they did it directly?

Of course, this way everyone with a higher salary would be taxed, not just the ‘willing’ ones. This could cause major issues for New York. Like people moving away. Okay, we are talking about those, who earn around $650,000, so, only the top 1%, but still. Let’s ask the cards about the possible consequences of the petition and the reasons behind it.

Psychic Timea’s Verdict:

Four of Swords:
Who would have thought that donating huge sums of money could be stressful? Those signing the petition wanted to opted in for an easier option. They wanted to be able to relax, knowing their money would be in good hands. The government knows best what to spend it on, right?

Three of Wands:
There is a need to expand one’s horizon. Why limit yourself to just one thing (i.e. higher tax), when you can donate in many ways? The petitioners need to keep an open mind.

Ten of Wands:
With money, there comes commitment and responsibility. Although giving that up might seem like the best option, but it’s not always the case. Wouldn’t it be better to decide about where it goes, who it supports? Take back control.
