Wild Superstitions From Around the World<\/h2>\n

Anyone who has ever dealt with strong beliefs in the metaphysical or occult environment, have heard of or actually participated in superstitions. Some we have an idea of where they got started, others its because that is what our family has done for generations and you do it absent mindedly without even giving it any thought.<\/p>\n

Doing a little research beyond just the psychic, metaphysical and occult arena, I found some hilarious superstitions that are devotedly followed through by the believers. I even recognized a few my great aunt used to do. Her favorite and one she most adamantly believed in was, when you spilled salt, to throw a few grains over your right shoulder and spit towards the North to keep the evil eye away from you.<\/p>\n

Here are a few superstitions that we still do and some that are really bizarre but still followed.<\/p>\n

  1. Don’t let your purse touch the floor. STILL do this one. To have your purse sit on the floor means you’ll become penniless. <\/li>\n
  2. People claim a demon lives in Hell\u2019s Half Acre, which is near Hot Springs, Arkansas, saying that animals and birds will not cross or fly near the area. It is thought to be an ancient Native American burial ground.<\/li>\n
  3. Don\u2019t take a rock or sand from the beach or a lava rock from a volcano away from Hawaii. You\u2019ll be cursed by the fire goddess Pele, who plays a role in many superstitions in the island state.<\/li>\n
  4. The angel statue at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City turned black from its previous golden bronze color because of a woman\u2019s infidelity. Among the superstitions connected with the statue: any girl who is kissed near the statue at night will die within six months.<\/li>\n
  5. In Louisiana which is filled with all kinds of voodoo superstitions and legends. To keep money flowing your way, never eat both ends of a loaf of bread, throw one away.<\/li>\n
  6. A door painted bright red keeps evil forces and financial trouble at bay.<\/li>\n
  7. If you let an empty rocking chair keep rocking after you get out of it, you invite evil spirits or you will get sick within a year.<\/li>\n
  8. Witches supposedly take the form of owls in New Mexico and the hoot of an owl is said to be a bad omen.<\/li>\n

  9. If you\u2019re a bridesmaid in exactly three weddings, you\u2019ll never be married.<\/li>\n
  10. When Catholics want to get the best offer on their houses, they bury a statue of St. Joseph in their front yard. The statue should be buried near the \u201cfor sale\u201d sign or close to the road. It should also be buried upside down, facing the house. Sellers should pray to St. Joseph until the house is sold, then unearth the statue and bring it to their new home.<\/li>\n
  11. Route 666 is known as The Devil\u2019s Highway or Satan\u2019s Highway. The number 666 is the number of \u201cthe Beast\u201d and signifies the Antichrist, as noted in the Book of Revelations. Truckers feel uneasy driving the 85 mile stretch from New Mexico through Colorado and Utah as many unexplained deaths have happened there.<\/li>\n
  12. From German and Scottish cultures, one superstition is that after someone dies, their pictures begin to fade.<\/li>\n
  13. Don’t place two mirrors opposite each other as facing mirrors open a doorway for the devil.<\/li>\n
  14. Don’t go right home after a funeral. Otherwise a bad spirit might tag along and come inside with you. Mourners should make a stop at a restaurant or store first just in case.<\/li>\n
  15. Whistling indoors invites evil into your home and summons demons according to a Lithuanian superstition.<\/li>\n
  16. Avoid sleeping with your head facing north. According to Japanese superstition, sleeping with your head in this direction is bad luck because that’s how the deceased are laid to rest.<\/li>\n
  17. Don\u2019t walk under a ladder. We are all familiar with this one and it dates back to medieval times. The ladder, back then, symbolized the gallows where people were hanged.<\/li>\n
  18. Don\u2019t open umbrellas indoor. According to this superstition, if you open up an umbrella before you head outside, bad luck will “rain” on you. There are some who say this belief came from the early Egyptians.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Some we are familiar with and even do. I have said to friends many times, \u201cdon\u2019t open the umbrella inside, it brings bad luck to the house!\u201d Do I believe it? In a way yes, because what you believe and what your environment was in your upbringing about superstitions is what you draw to your energy. <\/p>\n
