\u201cLife animated\u201d is a movie of how a young autistic man learned to communicate through the cartoon characters of Disney. These characters have been a part of nearly all our lives as we grew up, in whatever country, background or culture you belong to. Although we look back on them with a smile and the innocence of a child, they can sometimes be stereotypical and quite controversial by today\u2019s standards. For this young man, they were the gateway he needed to reach from his hidden world to our world outside.<\/p>\n
Documentarian Roger Ross Williams took a touching but straightforward look at a young man who is autistic and had developed a way of communicating via the cartoon characters. It is based on the prize-winning book by Ron Suskind, whose son is the subject of the documentary. This wasn\u2019t something that was thought to Owen, the subject of the project, he just appeared to sort it out for himself. This is amazing on many levels, but what\u2019s more important and more valuable to any parent with this condition. Owen has shown that there is a fully functional person within the silent walls of autism and perhaps in his own way has shown us, that although we haven\u2019t found it yet, there is a doorway that hopefully one day we will find the key for.<\/p>\n
What to the cards say around Owen and this condition? We drew the Six of Cups, the Queen of Coins and the Six of Wands. The Six of Cups shows someone who is devoid of the evils and problems of the world and knows only love and peace in his world. The Queen of Coins represents someone who cares for him, his only currency is the person around him, the give and take are mutual and he is very aware of what is going on. It\u2019s as though only one link on the chain is broken, but he knows there is another way. The Six of Wands indicates a very clever brain there. It is signalled already by his ability to show those around him that he has found a way of communicating that they would never have believed. I\u2019m very hopeful that this is a key that many can use to unlock the silent door and open their world. We wish him well.<\/p>\n
