Hollywood legend Robert Redford has recently turned 80 years old. He was born on August 18 in Santa Monica. His milkman father worked long hours and so a young Robert became close to his uncle until tragedy struck. Uncle sadly died in World War II. His Jeep came under fire in Luxembourg whilst serving with General Patton\u2019s Third Army in 1945. In a cruel twist of fate, further tragedy struck when his mother died after having stillborn twins. Robert was 18 years old.<\/p>\n
After losing a baseball scholarship, Redford went on to elope with his first love who became his wife of 28 years. They went on to have a son who sadly died of cot death at ten weeks old. Cot death was a little-known condition at the time. A second son was born three years later. He developed ulcerative colitis in his teens and went on to have his colon removed as well as two liver transplants by the age of 30. Redford’s daughter’s fianc\u00e9 was found deceased, shot in the back of the head. He later revealed that dealing with his children’s problems was the hardest thing for him.<\/p>\n
The big break came for Redford in 1967 when he starred in Barefoot in the Park with Jane Fonda. He was then handpicked by Paul Newman for his role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. This was the beginning of a friendship that lasted until Newman\u2019s death in 2008. Redford described Newman as a real friend. He also starred in movies such as ‘The Way We Were,’ ‘All the Presidents\u2019 Men’ and ‘Indecent Proposal.’<\/p>\n
Redford grandfather to seven and lives with his second wife at their 6,000-acre ranch. Although he has had more than his fair share of personal tragedy he does not like to dwell on the past. By his own admission he ‘likes to keep rolling forward!’<\/p>\n
For Mr. Redford, it is business as usual as he promotes his new movie Pete\u2019s Dragon.<\/p>\n

The Five of Swords is very much a card about surrender and defeat. Robert has been through many challenges that most people cannot begin to comprehend. He has played the cards that he has been dealt with, with dignity and integrity looking to the future without wishing to apportion blame. The Two of Swords shows that although time has been spent going through a period of ‘stalemate’ he has continued in a forward direction with compromise and diplomacy, despite feeling unsure of where it may lead. The Nine of Pentacles is the card of abundance. Redford has achieved much throughout his career and within his personal life and now is the time to reap the rewards.
