Fences tells the story of Troy Maxson (Denzil Washington) and his wife Rose (Viola Davis). It\u2019s set in Pittsburg in the 1950\u2019s. Troy and Rose live with their son Cory. Troy has a son from a previous relationship. He discovers that his current mistress becomes pregnant with his child and so has to admit his infidelities to his wife. Rose considers the sacrifices that she has made for her husband and the couple becomes estranged, albeit living in the same house. Rose asks Troy to build a fence around their house, their physical and metaphorical barrier to from the outside, keeping their family within the fence and everything else that doesn\u2019t belong, outside the fence.<\/p>\n
The issue of race has been raised due to the (almost) all black cast. Viola says that she does not consider the film to be political in its basic form, she says the film represents family and a man who doesn\u2019t want to take ownership of the impact his negative behaviour\u2019s have on his family. She has wholeheartedly embraced the role of Rose for the second time having previously \u2018met\u2019 Rose when she starred in the Broadway version of Fences in 2010, going on to win a Tony Award for her performance.<\/p>\n
One thing\u2019s for certain, Viola\u2019s strength of conviction and fight to be recognized has paid off. She\u2019s stacked up a raft of awards over the past few years and made history in the process. The Academy Award nominations say that Viola has been accepted as a major player in Hollywood. Let\u2019s leave the last word to Viola, \u2018It\u2019s not every day that Hollywood thinks of translating a play to screen. It doesn\u2019t scream \u2018moneymaker\u2019, but it does scream art.\u2019 Indeed!<\/p>\n

\nThis represents Viola, innovative actress whose controlled passion is channeled intellectually via her movie roles. This card shows Viola emerging from her \u2018castle\u2019 to receive surprising news which will prove to be beneficial in the future.<\/p>\n
The Prince of Wands <\/b>
\nThis represents opportunity that brings about positive change. I feel that the nomination will catapult Viola to new heights bringing further adulation.<\/p>\n
Viola has already won in the eyes of many, but part of her will always be the child amongst her siblings in South Carolina. She has already made history and I feel that she will continue on this upward trajectory. Well done Viola for rising through the ranks.<\/p>\n
