During a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything session however, Kilmer addressed his health, admitting he had \u201ca healing\u201d of cancer.\u201d A fan asked Kilmer about Michael Douglas\u2019 2016 comments that suggested the \u2018Top Gun\u2019 star was battling cancer. At the time, Kilmer said Douglas was \u201cmisinformed.\u201d \u201cWhat was the story behind that?\u201d the Reddit user wrote. In October, Kilmer\u2019s \u201cThe Ghost and the Darkness\u201d costar Michael Douglas raised concerns about Kilmer\u2019s health during a London event. Douglas said at the time that Kilmer was \u201cdealing with exactly what I had,\u201d referring to oral cancer, and added that things didn\u2019t look too good for Kilmer.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was probably trying to help me because the press asked where I was these days. I did have a healing of cancer but my tongue is still swollen although healing all the time,\u201d Kilmer answered. \u201cBecause I don\u2019t sound my normal self yet people think I may still be under the weather.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prior to this AMA, Kilmer had never publicly admitted he had cancer. Last November he was reportedly having trouble speaking while at an event promoting his one-man play \u201cCitizen Twain.\u201d During that event, he reportedly told the crowd his tongue was swollen and he was \u201cstill recovering,\u201d but did not say from what.<\/p>\n
Rumors about his health first surfaced in January 2015, when it was reported Kilmer had been hospitalized for bleeding from his throat. Outlets reported he underwent surgery for a throat tumor. The actor continually denied any illness or surgery, though was spotted later that year with what appeared to be a tracheostomy tube around his neck. After that, he began covering his neck with scarves or bandanas while out in public but still did not address his illness. Kilmer is a Christian Scientist whose beliefs are that illness of the body is an illusion of the mind so the mind heals the body and they do not believe in any kind of medical assistance. Kilmer is staying mum about the \u201chealing\u201d he had as much as he did while battling cancer.<\/p>\n
