In the years since drawing Oscar audience attention to China\u2019s \u201chorrendous human rights situation,\u201d Gere has remained dogged in his cause. Calling a boycott of the 2008 Olympics, pressuring China to make Tibet independent, and speaking out against the country in myriad interviews. While the actor has managed to maintain a tidy career acting in independent films, Gere reveals that even smaller-budget productions have balked at bringing him on board. \u201cThere was something I was going do with a Chinese director and two weeks before we were going to shoot, he called saying, \u2018Sorry, I can\u2019t do it,\u2019\u201d explains Gere. \u201cWe had a secret phone call on a protected line. If I had worked with this director, he and his family would never have been allowed to leave the country ever again, and he would never work.\u201d But don\u2019t get it twisted, Gere isn\u2019t regretting the fact that he isn\u2019t scoring parts in franchise films and blow-\u2019em-up blockbusters. For starters: ever since the career tidal shift, Gere hasn\u2019t had to \u201cput on a tuxedo again\u201d for any contractually obligated red-carpet appearance, which the actor is just \u201cfine\u201d with. Secondly, Gere says, in a delicious Hollywood burn: \u201cI\u2019m not interested in playing the wizened Jedi in your tentpole.\u201d Finally and most important, Gere has something that Hollywood doesn\u2019t these days: money and, in conjunction, freedom. \u201cI was successful enough in the last three decades that I can afford to do these smaller films now,\u201d the actor says. Essentially telling China and its financed Hollywood pictures, \u201cThe feeling is mutual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not likely. Making money is the bottom line of any movie production. I believe that Gere is a true actor and not just a movie star. He enjoys his trade and acting is what he loves regardless of red carpet entrances or not.<\/p>\n
