Jill, Jessa, Jinger and Joy Dugger have filed a federal breach of privacy suit against In Touch magazine and Arkansas law enforcement over police documents released to the magazine through a Freedom of Information Act request in 2015. The documents revealed Josh Duggar molested underage girls as a teenager, including some of his sisters, an issue the children\u2019s parents knew about. The sisters claim that when they spoke to investigators in 2006 as minors, they were assured their statements would not be made public. They say that under Arkansas law, information collected involving minors is not subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.<\/p>\n
According to the lawsuit, the four sisters are seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages against the Arkansas city of Springdale, Arkansas\u2019 Washington County, members of the Springdale Police Department and In Touch magazine, alleging they were \u201crevictimized\u201d by the release of the documents that contained \u201ccosmetic editing\u201d allowing them to be identified as their brother\u2019s victims. In its report, In Touch did not identify Josh\u2019s victims by name. It was Jessa and Jill who identified themselves as two of Josh\u2019s five underage victims when they participated in an interview with Megyn Kelly on \u201cThe Kelly File.\u201d With the filing of their lawsuit, Jinger and Joy confirmed they were victims as well. The identity of the fifth victim remains unknown.<\/p>\n
But the sisters claim that by not editing their parents\u2019 names, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, In Touch clearly identified the sisters as victims. They allege that because of the magazine\u2019s report, they have been \u201csubjected to spiteful and harsh comments and harassment\u201d on social media from those who have \u201cchastised their personal decision to forgive their brother.\u201d They further allege that In Touch used \u201csensationalized headlines to lure readers into salacious stories and exploited their pain and suffering.\u201d Additionally, they claim In Touch \u201cscandalized their experiences as victims of sexual abuse by their brother.\u201d At the time that In Touch\u2019s report was published, the Duggar sisters were starring on \u201c19 Kids and Counting,\u201d which began following the family in 2008 and became TLC\u2019s highest rated reality show. Lawyers for the sisters stated: \u201cRevealing juvenile identities under these circumstances is unacceptable, and it\u2019s against the law. The media and custodians of public records who let these children down must be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

This lawsuit, albeit involving terrible experiences these young girls were subjected to, feels too much like a witch hunt for profit. The Duggars all seemed to take the outcome of the exposure in the stride of Christian forgiveness but later were shown to be hiding much of the truth of what really happened. A settlement will be made but definitely not what the Duggar sisters are hoping for.<\/p>\n
