The BBC reports she will make her debut on the show around Christmastime. Fans had been eagerly anticipating the news and names like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Kris Marshall and Natalie Dormer were being thrown around as possibilities. It is Whittaker who will be replacing Peter Capaldi as the Doctor in the upcoming series, to be shown on BBC One and BBC America. Whittaker, is the first female Doctor in the show\u2019s history playing the title role in the series. \u201cIt\u2019s more than an honor to play the Doctor,\u201d Whittaker told the BBC. \u201cIt means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can\u2019t wait.\u201d She hopes \u201cDoctor Who\u201d fans aren\u2019t afraid of change. The actress told the BBC she wants the show\u2019s viewers to not be \u201cscared\u201d by her gender. \u201cDoctor Who represents everything that\u2019s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.\u201d She said of her casting as the 13th Doctor that \u201cit feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves and not be boxed in by what you\u2019re told you can and can\u2019t be. The sci-fi series has been shaking up its conventions lately as earlier this year, actress Pearl Mackie was introduced as Bill, the series\u2019 first openly gay companion. According to the BBC, the Peter Capaldi had wanted to see a woman replace him in the lead role on \u201cDoctor Who\u201d and has given Whittaker his blessing. \u201cAnyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker\u2019s work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cShe has above all the huge heart to play this most special part.
