The trailer for the director\u2019s latest film, \u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d looks stunning. Sally Hawkins plays a mute woman trapped in a life of silence and isolation, with a monotonous job cleaning a covert government facility. Elisa\u2019s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Life for her begins to perk up when she takes interest in a mysterious mer-creature (Doug Jones) subjected to wicked experiments at the hands of a scientist (Michael Shannon) who runs the laboratory. Naturally, she wants this scaly, spiked hostage freed. What could go wrong? Uh-Huh! Del Toro, who also made \u201cHellboy,\u201d dropped out of his \u201cPacific Rim\u201d sequel to make \u201cThe Shape of Water,\u201d so it\u2019s clearly a passion project. \t<\/p>\n

Doug Jones (who plays the fish-man creature) shared some information about the movie plot during an interview that he conducted with Collider. \u201cIt\u2019s a 1963 drama\u2014it\u2019s not a sci-fi [film], it\u2019s not a genre film but I am a creature in it. I\u2019m a fish man that\u2019s kind of a one-of-kind. I\u2019m an enigma, nobody knows where I came from; I\u2019m the last of my species so I\u2019m like a natural anomaly. And I\u2019m being studied and tested in a U.S. government facility in 1963, so the Russian Cold War is on, the race for space is on, so there\u2019s all that backdrop and that undercurrent. I\u2019m being tested for how can they use me for advantages in military or space travel, or my technology\u2014can we make this usable for humans? So, they\u2019re trying to keep me a secret from the Russians.\u201d Fish creatures aside, Jones went on to explain that the love story is really what is at the heart of \u201cThe Shape of Water.\u201d \u201cMeanwhile, there\u2019s a love story that brews out of it, and that would be the cleaning lady played by Sally Hawkins. She comes and finds me, has sympathy on me, and then that\u2019s the story that you\u2019re really gonna follow with this whole backdrop.\u201d\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
