\tMore than six months have passed since the loss of Hollywood icons Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, but through daughter and granddaughter Billie Lourd, their legacy lives on. Losing two family members in the span of days is nothing short of tragic but Lourd has proudly taken up the family mantle, appearing at a \u201cStar Wars\u201d festival in April and starring in the forthcoming season of \u201cAmerican Horror Story.\u201d In her first cover story since Fisher\u2019s and Reynolds\u2019 deaths, Lourd sat down with actress Sarah Paulson for a wide-ranging interview in Town & Country about what her life looks like during this period of transition.\t<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI\u2019ve always kind of lived in their shadows and now is the first time in my life when I get to own my life and stand on my own,\u201d Lourd said. \u201cI love being my mother\u2019s daughter, and it\u2019s something I always will be, but now I get to be just Billie.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of pressure because she had such an incredible legacy,\u201d she added, \u201cand now I have to uphold that and make it evolve in my own way.\u201d Apart from a series regular gig on Fox\u2019s \u201cScream Queens\u201d and a bit part in the new \u201cStar Wars\u201d films, the 25-year-old is relatively new to the world of acting, if you don\u2019t count her unorthodox upbringing surrounded by screen legends. \u201cMy mom actually pointed me toward it,\u201d Lourd said of her start in the business. \u201cThe first thing I did was \u2018Star Wars: The Force Awakens.\u2019 J.J. Abrams called and said they couldn\u2019t find anybody for this one part and would I come in and read for it. I didn\u2019t get the part but I got another extra part with three lines. The thing is, I was bizarrely comfortable on set. My mother would pull me aside and be like, \u2018It\u2019s weird that you\u2019re so comfortable here. This is the most uncomfortable environment in the world. If you\u2019re comfortable here, you should do this.\u2019\u201d
\nDays before her death, Lourd revealed Reynolds was still encouraging her to \u201cput an act together\u201d and hone her craft.\n\t<\/p>\n
Lourd has also internalized lessons from both her mother\u2019s and grandmother\u2019s time in the spotlight, learning from both their triumphs and mistakes. Fisher was famously candid about her personal struggles and family life, mining them for material in five books and a one-woman show, whereas Lourd wants to keep things more private. \u201cFrom my mom, maybe living too out in the open,\u201d she said. It\u2019s good to a certain extent. It\u2019s good to be authentic, to help other people, but if it\u2019s not helping other people, then don\u2019t do it. There were a couple incidents I wish she could have kept to herself. But, you know, that was the beauty of her.\u201d But through it all, Lourd has committed to \u201cfind the funny\u201d \u2015 a mantra of her mother\u2019s that\u2019s guided her through these past few months. \u201cIf life\u2019s not funny, then it\u2019s just true and that would be unacceptable. Even when she died, that was what got me through that whole thing. When Debbie died the next day, I could just picture her saying, \u2018Well, she\u2019s upstaging me once again, of course \u2014 she had to.\u2019\u201d \t\t<\/p>\n
