On Monday, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) announced it had received a $1 million grant from the famous couple, courtesy of the Clooney Foundation for Justice. The announcement cited the violence sparked by a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, this month as an indicator of a greater need to combat hate groups.\n<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhat happened in Charlottesville and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate,\u201d the couple said in a statement, per the SPLC. The nonprofit organization, founded in 1971, focuses on protecting civil rights and combatting domestic hate groups.
\nAccording to Deadline, the couple added in a statement, \u201cAmal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality. There are no two sides to bigotry and hate.\u201d “What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.” George and Amal co-founded the Clooney Foundation For Justice in 2016 \u201cto advance justice in courtrooms, communities, and classrooms around the world.\u201d Since its organization, the foundation has partnered with UNICEF to open schools for Syrian refugees in Lebanon and also sponsored the resettlement of those refugees.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe Charlottesville violence left 19 injured and one woman, 32-year-old Heather Heyer, dead. The $1 million grant is part of a joint initiative with the non-profit SPLC to prevent violent extremism in the U.S and monitors the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists, currently tracking more than 1,600 extremist groups operating across the country. It has used litigation to win court judgments against 10 major white supremacist organizations and 50 individuals who led them or participated in violent acts. \u201cWe are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States,\u201d the Clooney\u2019s said. \u201cWhat happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
